How does EMDR work
When disturbing experiences occur, they are stored in the brain along with all the sights, sounds, thoughts, and feelings that accompanied them. During times of significant distress, the brain may be unable to process these experiences normally, causing negative thoughts and feelings to become “trapped” in the nervous system. Because these emotions haven't been fully processed, they often fade from our immediate awareness, yet the distress lives on in the nervous system, potentially causing random anxiety or emotional disturbances for no apparent reason. EMDR works in two vital ways: first, it gently “unlocks” those stored memories and emotions, and second, it supports the brain in successfully processing the experience to find natural resolution.

FAQs about EMDR
Will EMDR erase my memories?
No. EMDR does not erase your memories. Instead, it helps your brain file them away in a more settled, less distressing way. You may still remember what happened, but it usually feels less intense, less overwhelming, and more in the past rather than constantly in the present.
Do I have to talk about everything?
Not at all. In EMDR, you remain in complete control of what you share. While we identify the difficult experiences you'd like to resolve, we don't require you to go into exhaustive verbal detail for the therapy to be effective.
Is EMDR therapy the same as hypnosis?
No. EMDR is not hypnosis. You stay awake, aware, and in control throughout the session. There is no suggestion or mind control. Instead, we gently guide your attention while your brain does its own natural processing, and you can pause or stop at any time.
How long is an EMDR therapy session?
Sessions are usually 60–90 minutes. Sometimes a longer 90‑minute session can be helpful when we are focusing on a particularly difficult memory. We will always discuss this together beforehand so you know what to expect and can choose what feels right for you.
Is online EMDR effective?
Yes, EMDR is highly effective via telehealth. Working from your own safe environment can actually enhance the sense of security. We use specialized, trauma-sensitive online tools to guide the processing just as we would in person.
